Three stacked chevrons on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman in a light blue acid-wash top and pale denim shorts stands with her arm bent down at her side, her face cropped out of frame. The tattoo is three stacked chevron lines in thin, solid black linework, placed on the outer forearm. The image is in natural colour with a soft, slightly muted tone and a plain wooden fence in the background.

Mairead had been repainting the chevrons on the slipway since the spring gales took the first set, and by October her tin of white was nearly empty. Three stacked arrows, each one narrower than the last, pointed the boats past the Skerry Rocks and into the channel where the bottom dropped away safely. Her grandfather had cut them into the granite with a cold chisel. The sea had worn them soft, so every autumn she went down at low water with a brush and a scrap of sandpaper and made them sharp again.

On the third night of the north-easterly, the lamp in the kirk tower went out. Her brother's boat, the Ceilidh, was still somewhere beyond the point, and the fog came in so thick that the harbour lights seemed to float on nothing. Mairead ran down the hill in her oilskins with a torch wedged under her arm. She didn't wait for the tide to turn. She scrubbed the first chevron with her sleeve, then the second, and the beam caught the point of the third.
The Ceilidh came round the rocks at half past two, low in the water and sluggish, her brother standing at the wheel with spray freezing in his beard. He had seen the marks. He told her so on the quay, and then said nothing else for a long time, only pressed his cold hand against her cheek.
In the morning she painted the arrows again, clean and dry, pointing home.
