Three chevron arrows on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows three thin black chevrons stacked one above another, pointing downwards along the outer forearm. The lines are crisp and even, with no shading, and the tattoo is small and simple against the skin. The image is cropped at the torso and thigh, with a blue t-shirt, pale denim shorts and a weathered wooden fence behind, and the colour is muted with a cool blue tint.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tamsin, the chevrons are back on the sea wall at Holm Cut, three of them, painted in the grey that the salt never seems to take. Somebody has been crossing the causeway at low water again. I think it is the Pennick boy, because his tide chalk is always smudged on the left where he leans on it with his shoulder.

You will remember what they mean. Three pointing down means the undercroft gate is open and the old tram tunnel runs dry under the shingle. One means shut. Two means ask someone first. Nobody has walked that tunnel since the surge year, when the water came up through the ticket hall and took the signal boxes with it, so I had always assumed the marks were just habit, the way people still touch a doorframe for luck.

I went down yesterday with the paraffin lamp. At the third arch, behind a rusted tram seat, there was a tin box wedged in the brick. Inside was a folded map in your square capitals, dated the week before you left for the mainland. It did not show the sea wall or the town. It showed the tunnel continuing past the flooded platform, under the channel, to a dot marked only with the word LAMP and a small arrow pointing down.

I have sent word to the Pennick boy to bring the rope and the long pole. The spring tide turns on Thursday and the water will drop further than it has in six years. If you are coming home, come before then, and bring the lamp you left hanging on the hook by the door. I will leave the gate open and the marks fresh, so that whoever reads them knows which way to go.
