Eye in triangle and mandala on upper arms
Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A man with his arms raised shows a matching pair of tattoos, each with an eye inside a triangle stacked above or below an ornate mandala design. The linework is fine and built from dense dots and hatching, giving the shading depth, and the outlines are bold and crisp. The work is entirely black and grey, and the tattoos fill the frame at the upper arms, with a smaller dark motif visible on the chest.

Sit yourself down, and mind the draught from the platform, because the old station never did learn to shut its doors. You want the story of Dorrit Vance, the signalman at Ashdown Junction? Well. Sixty years back he kept a little brass-rimmed lens in his waistcoat pocket, ground no bigger than a farthing, and he swore it let him see a train before it rounded the bend.

Nobody believed him until the winter the fog sat on the valley for nine days. The lamps in the cutting went out one by one. The timetables went soft with damp and nobody could read them. Dorrit climbed the box steps every morning with that lens held to his eye, and every morning he called out the trains by their smoke before the drivers could see their own hands. The company gave him a plate for his trouble. He never once said the word magic, mind. He only said he was keeping an eye on things.
Then came the night the northern express was running eleven minutes late and somebody had left the points at the far end set wrong. Dorrit saw it through the lens: a little triangle of light where a triangle of track should have been dark. He hauled the levers with his coat half off and stopped the engine a yard short of the gap. The driver wept into his gloves. Dorrit went back to his stove, turned the lens over slowly in his fingers, and said to nobody in particular, "Well. Now somebody's looking properly."
