Eye, compasses and leaves on the back of the neck

Realism · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A large tattoo covers the back of the neck, centred on a realistic eye inside a triangle with a grid-patterned border. A square and compasses motif frames the triangle, with shaded leaf shapes spreading to either side and a sunburst of rays above. The shading is smooth and highly detailed, with strong contrast and a soft gradient across the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The surveyor of Veln had gone blind in his left eye the spring his wife died, so when the king asked for the kingdom's border to be drawn true, he sent his daughter Ysolde instead. She took a brass pair of compasses, a square of oak with a true right angle, and a chain of fifty links that her father had hung on a nail for as long as she could remember.

She walked the border for a year. Where the river bent she set the compasses to the bend and marked it. Where the fields ran into the marsh she counted the furrows by hand, because the chain would not lie flat in mud. At every crossroads a tall ginkgo stood with its fan-shaped leaves turned gold, and the carters said the trees were older than the kingdom and watched the roads for it. On the hill above the mill there was a single standing stone with a carved eye cut into its face, and each evening she set her square against it and wrote down what she saw.

In the autumn the miller came to her tent with a purse of silver. The stone on the eastern boundary, he said, had been moved a hundred paces onto his land, and the king would be pleased if the map said otherwise. Ysolde measured the stone again in the rain. It had not moved. She told him so, and he went away with his purse.

When she brought the map to the palace, the king looked for a long while at the eye she had drawn at the centre of the triangle, and he found that he could not look away from it. It had been drawn so carefully that the line of the boundary seemed to run toward it from every side. "That is the true border," she said. "Everything inside it is seen."
