Small outlined triangle on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, plain triangle with an outline sits on the inner upper arm, above the elbow, with a dark sleeve pushed up above it. The linework is thin and even, and the shape is filled only by the bare skin. The image is black and white, with a pale wall behind the arm and a grey top on the right.

The fishwife at Gull Stack had three nails in her door, and she hung a lamp on each, because the sea road reached her house from three directions and the sea did not care which one a man walked up.

A stranger came up the cliff path in February with no coat and a sack of wet letters. He asked for a bed. She said the house was full. It was not full. It was only that the rooms were arranged the way her mother had arranged them, one room at each corner of a triangle, and no one who had not been measured for a corner could sleep under that roof.
He sat by the fire until the bread went hard. He told her the letters were for a woman in the town below, three of them, all from a husband who had drowned off the Dog Rock. She said she knew the woman. She said the husband had kept writing every week for a year after he was dead, and the postman had stopped carrying them.
In the morning there were three lamps lit on the sill and the sack was empty. The chalk lines were still on the scullery floor, and in the middle of them, where the stranger had slept, someone had drawn the three points again, sharper, so they would last. The fishwife swept around them and never let anyone stand inside.
