Eye of Horus on a toe
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small black Eye of Horus is drawn on the middle toe of a foot, with the eye, brow and curled lower line shown in thin, even linework. The tattoo is solid black with no shading or colour. The foot rests on a dark textured surface, and the pale skin and white toenails stand out against it.

The mist had sat on Saltcote for three days when Walter Dunne came down to breakfast with wet boots and asked, very politely, whether I had seen his good razor. I had not. I had seen the sand in his welts, though, and the look of a man who has been down to the groyne at four in the morning to watch for his son's boat.

Mrs Pilling's rule at Gull Terrace was simple: no lodger goes out before the kettle. I had made it when my Frank went down with the Maud and I kept the house alone. So I drew the eye for him instead. I took a pencil to the back of an old rent book and made the brow first, a long curve like a gull's wing at rest, then the round of the pupil, then the little falling stroke beneath it that my mother called the tear that never got to fall. Frank's name was the first I wrote under it, out of habit.
Walter took the page without a word and folded it into his waistcoat pocket. He told me later that the old Egyptians drew it to mend what was broken, a missing piece made whole again. I said I had never cared for Egyptians, only for a good pencil line. He laughed, the first laugh I had heard in that house since spring.
The boat came in at noon, low on the water but whole. Walter stood on the groyne with his hand in his pocket, and when the bow turned into the slack of the harbour I saw his fingers move over the folded paper. I went back to the kitchen and put the kettle on, and for once I did not count the cups.
