Small outline heart on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small heart outline sits on the inner wrist, drawn in a single thin black line with no shading or fill. The arm is photographed in black and white against a dark background with fine light speckles. The tattoo is centred in the lower part of the frame, leaving most of the forearm and hand visible.

Sit where the lamp can't blind you, boy, and mind the kettle. You'll want to hear this before the fog comes in, because it was fog that started it. Nineteen forty-one, the Gull Teeth light, and my predecessor, a man called Ezra Fenwick, had a habit I never understood until I'd kept the light myself for thirty years.

Every night he drew in the log. Not the weather, not the oil count. A heart. One line, the pen never lifted, the nib scratching the same small curve each time. I asked him once why one heart, and he said the line had to come back to where it started or it wasn't finished. He'd lost a brother to a trawler called the Marigold, and he drew that heart for the brother first, then for the crew of every boat that passed inside the rocks, whether they knew him or not.
The night I remember best, the fog sat on the water like wet wool and a little yawl came past without a light. I burned the lamp hard and sounded the horn until my teeth ached. Ezra was long dead by then, his ledger still on the shelf. I found the page where he'd drawn his hearts and I traced one in the damp on the glass with my finger, slow, never lifting it, hoping the line would reach them. At dawn the yawl was tied up in Porthkerris, two lads asleep in the bow, one of them only stirring when the gulls got loud.
So when they tell you the lamp does the work, boy, it doesn't. The heart does. Mind you draw yours without stopping, and it'll come back round to where it started, which is more than most of us manage.
