Faceless woman with butterflies and roses on back
Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo
A stylised head and shoulders of a woman sit centrally on the upper back, with her face replaced by a turquoise oval filled with blue and orange butterflies. Her dark hair is topped with pink and peach roses, and she wears drop earrings, a gold chain necklace and a dark blue top. Bold dark outlines and flat, saturated colour fills give a graphic, illustrative finish, and the word forgive appears in small script at the lower right edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mrs Ferris had hung the mirror at the top of the stairs so that every guest passed it on the way down to breakfast, and by the second week of September Nell had stopped looking into it. The glass was foxed at the corners and gave back a face that seemed a little too far away to be her own. She kept her paints in the wardrobe, her brushes wrapped in a tea towel, and a letter folded inside the lid of her tin. It was from her sister, and it said only one word, pressed hard into the paper: forgive.

She had read it so often that the ink had gone soft at the edges, and still she could not decide whether it was a command or a plea. On the Thursday the tide went out further than anyone had seen it go since the spring, leaving the rock pools full of sky. Nell carried a jam jar of turquoise paint down the steps to the groyne, where the old fishing crates were stacked against the wall, and she sat on one while the gulls argued over a split crab.
Blue butterflies rose from the marram grass as the wind swung round, and she watched them drift over the harbour wall as if they had somewhere better to be. She painted the first wing on the lid of a crate, then another, working fast with a dry brush before the colour could run. Orange wings came next, then a ring of pale roses along the top edge, each one a little crooked, the way her sister's handwriting leaned when she was tired. The sea came back in across the sand while she worked.
When Mrs Ferris found her there at dusk, she only tutted that the crate belonged to the Gilchrists and asked whether Nell wanted supper. Nell did not answer straight away. She had painted a woman's shoulders, a dark collar and a gold chain, but she had left the head as a bright empty oval with the butterflies settling over it. Let whoever came to look supply the rest, she thought, and went up to eat.
