Embrace with gold hair and flowers on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a woman with golden hair decorated with blue, orange and white flowers, holding a child with dark hair against her bare shoulder. The design uses a dark, even outline with flat fills, and the gold hair and flower details are the strongest colours. It sits on the outer upper arm, with the skin shown in soft focus against a pink background.

The gold thread came up from Antwerp on the Tuesday coach, wound on a card no bigger than a playing card, and Ida Brandl unpicked two evenings of work so the new colour would take the lamplight properly.

She was sewing the lining of her son's coat, the heavy wool one he would need on the Gdańsk crossing before the frost set in. Tobias had asked for nothing more than a plain inside pocket. What she gave him instead was hidden where no one would look: the inside of the left cuff, where a woman bent her head low, her hair falling in a sheet of gold scattered with blue and orange and white flowers. Folded into the crook of her arm was a boy with dark hair and closed eyes. Ida worked the last petal by the stub of a candle, biting each knot off short, because the wool was too thick for the needle and her fingers were too stiff for the thimble.

He found it on the second night out, when the wind had got into the rigging and there was nothing to do but hold the rail. He pushed his sleeve up to the deck lamp to check his watch, and the gold caught the light before he saw the stitches. He turned the cuff over, then back again, and counted the flowers without meaning to. There were eleven, one for every year she had sat at that frame since his father's boat stopped coming in.

Behind him, the harbour lamps of the town were already going out one by one, and somewhere among them was a window with a woman still bent over a frame, threading gold for a second boy who had not yet been born.
