Cartoon head with rose headscarf on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
A cartoon-style female head in profile wears round black-framed glasses and a blue headscarf with a pink rose, green leaves and yellow dots. Bold black outlines and flat areas of colour in blue, pink, red, yellow and green define the design, with a small amount of shading on the skin tones. The head is centred on the calf and fills most of the frame against a dark background.

The hall still smelled of floor polish and boiled cabbage, which Maureen decided was a mercy, because it meant nobody had touched the kitchen. Someone had strung paper chains from the basketball hoops and pinned a photo of Year Nine beside the squash cups. She found herself in it at once, third from the left, scowling under the blue headscarf her gran had knotted on after the nit outbreak, and behind the scowl the round black glasses she had hated so fiercely that she once threw them down the boys' toilets.

"Mo Pritchard, is that you?" A tall man in a fleece was holding out a plastic cup of warm rosé. It took her a second. Desmond Oyelaran had sat behind her for three years and had once, in Geography, flicked a rubber so accurately it landed in her glasses case. "You still wear that scarf?" he asked. "Only on bad days," she said, and tucked the trailing ribbon back over her shoulder.
They talked about the headmistress who had retired to Spain and the deputy who had not. Then Desmond confessed he had never stolen her glasses. He had found them in the netball court, panicked, and kept them in a drawer for twenty years, unable to give them back without admitting he had looked. He produced them from his jacket, folded and scratched. The lenses had gone milky, but the frames were the same bright black.
Maureen put them on for the first time in decades, and the hall snapped into focus: the paper chains, the tombola table, the wall of faces. "Right," she said. "Now you owe me a Geography exam." She left with the glasses on and the blue ribbon still flicking at her shoulder, and she did not look back at the photograph, because she already knew exactly how she had looked.
