Faceted diamond and star on a finger

Geometric · Other · Colour · Photo

A faceted diamond with a star burst sits on the side of a finger, with two thin dark leaf-like strokes curving beneath it. The gem is shaded in blue, teal and pale highlights to suggest light across its facets, while the leaves are solid dark lines. A gold ring with small clear stones sits on the neighbouring finger, and the pale background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody wanted the cloakroom on a Saturday, which is why Mr Hollis gave it to me. From my hatch behind the Palais I could see the dance floor through a gap in the velvet: the sprung boards, the mirror ball turning like a slow moon over couples in their good shoes. Coats came in heavy with rain and went out light with music.

The stone turned up in a pair of grey kid gloves left on the counter. One seam had split, and caught in the stitching was a little diamond no bigger than a lentil, cut in facets. Held to the bulb, it threw a blue-green flash across the ledger, then a white star that shivered on the wall. Mr Hollis said it was paste. Mr Hollis had never looked at anything properly in his life.

I kept it in my cardigan pocket for a week and turned it over while I counted tickets. The following Saturday a tall man with a neat moustache came asking after gloves with a split seam, and he described the split so exactly that I knew they were his. I handed them over. He didn't thank me. He looked at the stone in my palm the way you'd look at a face you used to know, and said, "Keep it. It only ever wanted a dance floor."

That night I stood under the chandelier while the band played its last waltz. I held the diamond up to the lights and let the star fall across the empty boards, and for three minutes the whole room was lit with something that belonged to nobody at all.
