Feather tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small feather is tattooed on the side of a finger, angled diagonally with its quill toward the lower left and its curled tip toward the upper right. The design uses black ink with fine outlines, dense hatching and stippled shading to show the feather's structure. The hand rests against a plain pale background, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

The queen of Carrow Dene wanted a pen that would never run dry, so she sent the weaver's girl down to the reed beds below the castle before the frost had left the water. Bett was twelve and had never been past the mill. She walked the causeway with her shoes in her hand and her skirts tucked high, and she did not stop until the marsh grass rose taller than her head.

It was a heron she found, though not the grey kind the millers kept off their ponds. This one stood on one leg in the shallows, and when it lifted its wing a single feather came loose and turned slowly in the cold air. Bett caught it before it touched the mud. The quill was thin as a hair and the vanes were ribbed with lines so fine she had to hold the feather to the light to count them. She counted forty before the sun went down behind the hill.
She carried it up to the castle past sentries who did not look at her, and laid it on the queen's table. The queen dipped it in the oak-gall ink and wrote a single word on the vellum: home. The black sat on the page dense and even, like shadow pooling in a hollow, and the queen read the word aloud three times before she trusted it.
The castle fell the spring after, as castles do, and the queen went north with her silver. Bett kept the feather in a cedar box and never wrote with it again. Its tip still curls toward the lid, as if it has only just stopped moving.
