Small outline heart on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands with matte dark nails rest against weathered wooden planks, wearing rings and a stack of thin black bracelets. A small heart is outlined in black on the side of one index finger, drawn with thin, even linework and no shading. The palette is muted, with the skin tones and grey wood dominating and the ink as the only dark accent.

The gate still won't shut properly, so I've left it propped with a sack of feed, and Dad says that's the least of our worries this year. You'll want to know about the heart. Thin lines, clean as a ruler, the same width all the way round, with no shading at all. Nobody in the parish will own to it.

I went and looked once the frost lifted. Whoever cut it knew what they were doing with a blade. They didn't hack at it the way Uncle Ray does when he's cross. Each curve closes exactly where it started, and the point at the bottom is sharp enough to catch your thumb. I laid my palm flat over it and the cold came straight through the wood.

Mum says it's probably one of the Hardy lads with too much time on his hands, but the Hardy lads couldn't draw a straight line to save their lives. I've started to think it's older than that, that it was there under the whitewash all along and the weather has only lifted it back up. Thirty winters and it still hasn't blurred.

So I've left it alone. When you come home at New Year, bring the good chisel, and we'll see whether we can find out who it was meant for. Or we can just leave it be and let the next frost tell us what it wants. Love to all of you, and tell Tom the hens are laying again.
