Small patterned feather tattoo on a finger

Blackwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small feather is tattooed on the side of a finger, with its quill curling at the top and its vane filled with dense, ornamental patterning. The linework and solid black fills are crisp, and the design sits neatly along the length of the finger. The image is in black and grey against a pale background, with a soft focus on two hands resting together.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dev had been collecting feathers from the ninth-floor walkway since October, and the one in his coat pocket was the best yet. It was a grey-brown flight feather that had come down through the gap in the balcony railings, its tip still stiff and its quill curling like a fern unrolling. Mrs Okafor on the fourteenth floor had told him that a feather keeps its shape only if you handle it with dry hands and a bit of patience.

Her flat smelled of linseed and metal polish. She clamped a lamp over the kitchen table and opened a tin of black ink, then drew the vane in fine lines, dividing it into barbs the way her mother had taught her in a village she never named. Where the pattern grew dense she filled the spaces solid, so the feather looked heavier than it was. "Thin the lines near the quill," she said, tapping the paper with her pen. "Otherwise it looks like it's trying too hard."

Dev practised on the back of his own hand first and made a mess of it. Then he rode the lift down with the drawing folded in his shirt, past floors where televisions murmured behind doors, and when the lobby doors swung open the wind caught the paper and nearly took it across the car park. He chased it between the bins and the bike rack and got it back, slightly torn at one corner.

The next Thursday he brought her a jay's feather, bright blue and barred with black. Mrs Okafor turned it over, then shook her head. "That one's for showing off," she said. "Bring me the grey ones. The grey ones stay." She set his drawing on the windowsill beside a jar of pigeon feathers, where the afternoon light could reach it.
