Small star tattoo on a finger
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of two hands with pale lilac nail polish, two of them finished with gold foil accents. A small solid black star tattoo sits on the side of one finger, with simple, clean edges. The background is a cream and brown leopard print fabric, and a black and silver feather-shaped hair clip and beaded bracelet are visible at the edges.

Eleven boats went out from Skerrow the week the herring turned, and the fog came down behind them like a wet sheet. Skipper Ada Pyle counted the lanterns along the bay and found one short. The Wren was missing, the smallest boat, sixteen feet of tarred pine with a lad named Hal at the tiller.

Nobody could see a thing. The old women on the quay said the only true mark in the sky was the Wren's star, a small hard point low over the north water that never blinked. Ada had painted that same star on the Wren's bow years back so the crews would know her boat from any other. Now she sent her men out to the harbour wall to bang pans and call into the murk.
Hal heard the pans before he saw anything. He had been steering by a pale point through the grey all night, and he had taken it for the star. When the fog thinned he saw it was the lamp in the chandler's window, lit by a widow whose husband had gone out the same way twenty years before. She had lit it every night since and never once said why.
Hal brought the Wren in on that light, bow first, and tied up at the wall before dawn. Ada came down with a lantern and found him asleep in the stern with his hand still on the tiller. She did not wake him. She walked to the chandler's and left a coin on the sill, and the lamp kept burning.
