Faceted pink heart gem on the ribs

Realism · Ribs · Colour · Photo

A faceted, heart-shaped gem in shades of pink and magenta sits at the centre of the image, framed by ornate black filigree with a small pointed finial at the top. Fine chains with tiny drops hang from the base of the design. The gem shading is detailed and glossy, and the composition is centred on the side of a bare torso with a grey top pulled up beside it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The stationmaster at Carrow Junction kept the lost property in a biscuit tin beneath the ticket hatch. By the spring of 1952 it held three pairs of gloves, a child's wooden horse with one ear gone, and a heart-shaped garnet in a filigree setting that had come off a broken chain. Porter Tom Aske found it between the rails on platform two, and he polished it on his sleeve every night before he locked up, because a stone like that should not sit in the dark.

Nobody claimed it. Tom watched the Thursday platform for a woman in a green coat who might have dropped it, though he only half believed she existed. Some weeks a boy with a cricket bat came through with his mother. Some weeks there was only rain coming sideways off the moor and the signal lamps buzzing like wasps. He began to tell the stone things, the way a man talks to a dog that has no name: about the goods trains, the fog, and how the cat in the signal box had kittens in the coal store.

In June a girl got down from the milk train with a torn paper ticket and a chain in her fist, the links bent open at one end. She had walked from the cottages above the cutting, and she said her grandmother had sent her to ask after a heart. Tom did not question her. He opened the tin, tipped the garnet into his palm, and held it up to the lamp so the facets threw small red coins across the platform, over the bench, over her shoes.

She fixed the clasp with her teeth while he watched. Then she turned towards the cutting, and the drops at the bottom of the chain swung and caught the light all the way up the steps, until she was gone, the tin was empty, and Tom had nothing left to polish.
