Fairy and pointed-hat figure silhouettes on wrists
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two photographs show matching black silhouette tattoos on the inner wrist and forearm. The left tattoo is a winged fairy seated on a small base, and the right is a leaping figure with pointed hair and a long pointed shoe. Both are solid black fills with smooth edges and no interior shading, shown against pale skin with dark-polished nails visible at the top of each frame.

The cook on the Mary Ellen swore the shadow had come aboard at Lerwick, folded small in the bottom of a kit bag, and that it had no business being there. Nobody listened until the third night out, when Tam Corrie found his own shadow gone from the deck planking under the lamp.

He went looking along the rails with the lantern held high. At the foot of the binnacle, on a brass base no bigger than a biscuit tin, sat a small winged light. It had its chin on its knee and it watched him with the patience of something that had been sitting a long time. 'Your shadow's out on the bowsprit,' it said, in a voice like wet string. 'It wants to see the sea before it goes.'
Tam asked what it would cost him. The light asked for nothing but a verse of the song his mother sang on the pier, the one about the herring boats that never came home. He sang it badly, with the wind tearing the words off him. The shadow came back over the rail in one long leap, pointed hat first, pointed shoe last, and stepped onto the deck as if it had always lived there.
At dawn the sun came up over the mast and laid two shadows on the wheelhouse wall, the winged one and the leaping one. Tam saw then that the light had kept his own shadow for the song. It sat on its brass base with a second shape folded at its feet, and when the ship rolled, the two of them rolled together, neither ever quite leaving the other behind.
