Small fine line black hummingbird tattoo on the inner wrist and forearm, with the hand raised against a pale fabric background.

Hummingbird on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black outline of a hummingbird in flight, with a long thin beak and a curling tail, sits on the inner wrist. The linework is thin and even, with a little shading along the wing. The pale fabric behind the arm gives the photo a warm yellow cast, and the tattoo sits centrally on the forearm just above the wrist.

The chapel window at Carrow Keep should have been shuttered, and it was not. Nell Hartigan stood on the broken step with the padlock key still warm in her fist and watched a small bird, green as wet moss, hang in the gap where the glass used to be.

The village shop had a story about it. In 1889 a crate came up from Liverpool with orchids packed in damp straw and a hummingbird inside, a gift for the Ashdown family's glasshouse. Nobody in the village believed the bird had outlived the family, but Nell's grandmother had sworn to it, and here it was, hovering over the nettles in the nave with its long beak aimed at the stone where the altar had been, its tail curled like the end of a question.

She tried to shoo it with her cap. It only rose, circled her head twice, and came back to the same spot. Eventually she followed it down the slope to the old glasshouse, where the door hung on one hinge and the ironwork had gone to rust. Inside, a row of dead orchids lay in their pots. On a bracket by the cracked panes sat a glass feeder, still half full of sugar water gone cloudy with age.

Nell tipped the feeder out, rinsed it at the rain barrel, and filled it from the flask in her coat. She hung it back on the bracket. The bird dropped through the broken roof and drank, wings a blur, then hung there looking at her as if she were the one who had been late. On the way back up the hill she left the chapel window as it was. Some locks, she decided, were only there to keep out people.
