Winged fairy in flowing dress
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A seated fairy with long, flowing hair and large, veined wings rests in a dynamic pose, one leg bent and a trailing gown spilling downward. The image is drawn in clean, delicate black outlines with fine hatching in the wings and dress, and no shading or fill. It is shown in plain black on a white background, with a balanced composition that fills a tall, vertical space.

The men from the council came back on Tuesday with their saws, and I stood in the lane with my arms folded like a gatepost until they went away again. You will think I've gone soft, Margaret. Perhaps I have. But the hawthorn at the bottom of the orchard has a lady living in it, and she has sat in the same crook since Father planted the thing in 1931, and I am not having her turned out for a bypass or a bus shelter.

You remember the summer you were nine and swore you saw her. I thought it was sunstroke and too many barley sugars. She sits with one knee drawn up, the way Mother used to sit on the back step shelling peas, and her hair comes down past her waist and catches in the brambles. Her gown runs off the branch in long ragged strips, like wet linen left on the line, and every evening when the swifts go over she lifts one hand as if checking the weather. I have started doing the same. It is absurd, and the roses have never been better.
Last week I found a tin on the wall by the water butt, the old cocoa tin with the Dutch girl on the lid, full of thimbles and a pencil stub. Tucked under them was a scrap of something gauzy and veined like a pressed leaf, with the fine lines still sharp enough to cut a fingertip. I put it back where I found it. I think it is a payment, or a thank you, or a receipt. I have no idea which.
Come up at the end of the month. Bring your good boots. I want you to see the hawthorn before they put the fence round it, and I want you to hold your tongue while we do it. Mind the third step at the gate, it's loose. Your loving sister, Ada.
