Fairy silhouette sitting on a crescent moon
Black and grey · Flash
A solid black silhouette of a winged fairy with a tousled hairstyle sits on the lower tip of a large crescent moon. The moon is drawn as two loose, brushy black outlines that taper at the ends, with the fairy's legs dangling over the curve. The design is in black ink on white with no shading or colour.

She was no bigger than a tea caddy, and she perched on the lower horn with her legs swinging over the black water, combing her hair with her fingers as though she had all the time in the world. The children from the Co-op row went down to the river every evening to watch her. Her wings were the colour of wet slate. When she grew bored she would fold them and tip herself off, and the whole row would hold its breath until she caught the moon again.
Walter Pinder, who kept the ferry, said she was a sign of something. The vicar said she was a sign of nothing and that the moon was only the moon. But in March the mill wheel seized, and the fairy came up the bank one morning and asked him for a length of copper wire. She would not say what it was for.
Walter gave it to her. A week later the wheel turned again and the river ran clear over the stones. On the Sunday after, the moon was seen lying on its back like a silver boat, and the fairy was nowhere. Only the wire remained, looped round the mooring post in a tidy spiral, and Walter never did learn whose broken thing she had been mending.
