Fairy silhouette with butterflies on upper back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
The left photograph shows a solid black silhouette of a seated fairy with outlined wings and a scatter of small butterflies across the upper back, with the subject's face cropped out of frame. The right panel is a flat drawing of a fairy silhouette standing on a dandelion seed head on a tan background, with loose seeds drifting around it. The tattoo uses black ink and grey shading with no colour, and the composition is clean against plain skin and background.

The snow had shut the Haddon road for nine days, and Maud Pennock had counted the coal twice before the knock came at the kitchen shutter. It was not a knock so much as a tap, the sound a moth makes against glass. When she unlatched it, a fairy stepped onto the sill, shaking snow from her wings like a wet lace collar, and asked politely for a dish of milk.

She was no taller than a teaspoon. She drank the milk sitting on the bread board, and while she drank she told the carter, the drover and the two sisters from Kendal sheltering by the fire that she had come down from the hill, where the dandelion clocks had gone to sleep under the frost. Every seed she had ever blown carried a wish, she said, and the pale butterflies that trailed her were wishes not yet let go. The drover laughed into his ale. Maud did not laugh, because she had a wish of her own in a jar on the windowsill, a dandelion clock she had picked in August and never had the heart to blow.
On the ninth night the fairy said the thaw was coming and she must be gone before the sap rose, or she would be stuck in the wood of the inn for good. Maud fetched the jar. The seeds were brittle as old paper. The fairy held one up and breathed on it, and the whole room filled with grey drifting seeds and butterflies. The drover's cough went quiet, and the sisters stood up to watch them go out through the chimney.
In the morning the road was open and the fairy was gone. By the kitchen door, where the snow had melted first, a single dandelion stood with its head full of seeds. Maud left it standing, and every time the wind came down off the hill she watched the wishes go.
