Fairy silhouette with blue wings
Mixed · Flash
A solid black silhouette of a winged fairy with arms raised above her head and one leg bent, shown in profile against a white background. The body is a flat black fill with no interior linework, while the large wings are outlined in black and shaded from deep navy at the top to lighter cyan toward the edges. The composition is centred and isolated, with the figure and wings filling most of the vertical frame.

She was black as a cut-out against the water, not a scrap of colour on her except the wings, which were deep navy at the roots and paled to the shallows-blue of Ardvay in June toward the edges. One knee was bent, as if she'd been caught mid-step. I didn't call out. You don't, on Skerra. I sat on the wall with my flask, and she turned once, slow, and the wings lifted the whole rock with a sound like a sheet going up on the line.
This morning there were small wet footprints on the slipway, leading down into the water, and a feather that was never a gull's. I've pinned it above the range. The post boat is due Thursday, and I've put your name on the list. Come over before the tide turns, and bring the good thread, because Mrs Lennox says the dancers always want their hems mended before the autumn gales.
