Fairy silhouette holding a wand

Black and grey · Flash

The image shows a solid black silhouette of a small winged fairy in mid-flight, with one arm extended and holding a slim wand. The figure has no interior linework or shading, so its outline and wings are the only detail. It is set against a plain white background with the silhouette filling most of the frame.

The miller had the wand nailed above his door like a poacher's snare, and I had to climb his ladder in the rain to bring it down. My hands were slick and the wood was cold, and I nearly dropped it into the mud before I got it into my coat.

She was waiting at the stile when I came back through the wood, a cut-out of a girl hanging in the grey air with one arm stretched out, as if she meant to take the wand before I'd handed it over. Nobody in Thornbury had ever seen her colour. Old Mother Pell said she'd traded it to the hedge for the gift of going wherever she pleased, and that a shape with no paint on it can slip through any gap in the world.

"You're not the miller," she said. Her voice was thin as cut paper. I asked what the wand was worth to her, and she said the price was the one I'd already paid. I had called her name three times at the wood's edge that morning, not knowing she could hear it, and each call had left a little more of me in the hedgerow.

I gave her the wand. She took it and turned once in the air, and where her shape had been there was a bright gap in the dusk, like light through a shutter. On the stile lay a single bead of blue no bigger than a lentil. I still carry it in my waistcoat pocket, and I still call her name when I pass the hedge, only quieter now.
