Fairy silhouette with star trail on ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black fairy silhouette with wings drawn in outline and shading sits on the ankle, with a curling trail of small stars and dots falling down the leg. The wings use thin linework with soft grey shading, while the figure is filled in solid black. The image is a close, well-lit photo against a dark background, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

Nurse Dorothy Pell had been on the children's ward for nineteen years, and she knew the corridor lights dimmed at a quarter past two whether anyone asked them to or not. "They don't go anywhere," she said, tucking the sheet under his heels. "They're just busy somewhere the sun is louder."
He thought about this with the seriousness of seven-year-olds. "Then who sweeps them up?"
She laughed quietly, because the sister's office door was ajar. Across the ward, a porter named Eamon Quill was pushing a trolley of clean linen past the window, and the glass caught the moon. Eamon had a story his grandmother told in Mayo about a fairy who lived in the hedge behind the church and came out only when someone was awake enough to notice her. Each night she trailed a line of light down the lane, and whoever followed it home came back with better luck.
The boy in bed six fell asleep before she reached the door. Dorothy stood in the corridor and looked at the dark window, where a faint dust of light, perhaps only the reflection of the monitor, slid down the glass toward the car park. She followed it with her eyes until the bell rang for the morning handover, and by then she had decided that somebody ought to be sweeping.
