Red heart and black silhouettes on an ankle

Ankle · Mixed · Photo

A small tattoo on the ankle shows a red heart outline enclosing two black silhouette shapes, one smaller than the other, with a further black shape below. The black areas are solid fills set against thinner red linework. Mixed red and black ink sits on pale skin, with the foot and lower leg visible in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You reach the market before the awnings are rolled back, and the rain has already found every gap between the stalls. Your mother's haberdashery van sits at the far end, near the fish, its canvas sagging under a puddle the size of a cart. She is inside counting reels of red thread onto a wooden spindle, and she does not look up when you come in dripping, because she is already doing the sums of the day.

Mr Pryce from the fish stall leans out under his dripping sign and tells you the red thread is for keeping people from walking off. Tie one end to yourself and the other to someone you love, he says, and the rain can't pull you apart on the way home. You laugh at him, but you take a length anyway and knot one end around your brother's wrist while he hops from foot to foot, impatient to catch the bus. He is seven and thinks everything is a race.

He runs. The thread snaps taut and drags you through the puddles, past the cabbages and the dripping tarpaulins, until you are both at the market gate with water running off your chins. He stops, breathing hard, and turns back to look at you, and the thread between you goes slack in the rain. You wind what is left of it around your fingers, and the lamps come on one by one along the stalls behind you.
