Fairy with flower crown and leaf wings

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A red-haired fairy with pointed ears and green eyes wears a crown of daisies and orange flowers, and wears a lavender dress. Large green and yellow leaf-shaped wings frame her, with autumn leaves at the lower edge. Bold black outlines define the figure, with soft blended shading in pink, green and purple across a light background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You take the handover at ten past eleven, and the night sister tells you the same thing she tells everyone: nothing happens on Ward Nine until about three, and then everything does. The windows have been spotting with leaves since October, brown and gold blown in under the car park lights, and the cleaners keep sweeping them from the corridor only to find more by morning.

At half past one you find the crown. It sits on the chair beside bed fourteen, a ring of dried daisies and orange marigolds wired onto a bent coat hanger. The old man in the bed says his wife made it for her birthday on this ward forty years ago, and she wore it to the nurses' station to show off. He is asleep before you can ask whether she is still coming. You leave it where it is, because the crown is not yours to move.

Around three the lights in the sluice flicker, and you go to check, and there is a small green leaf stuck to the inside of the glass, shaped like a wing and veined so finely you think of a drawing rather than a tree. You peel it free. It is damp and oddly warm. Behind you the ward is quiet, and somewhere a buzzer goes off and goes off again.

You put the leaf in your breast pocket beside your pen, and at four the old man wakes, asks for water, and says, without opening his eyes, that the girl with the crown has been to see him. You tell him that is nice. You do not tell him the chair is empty, because the crown is still on it, and it smells faintly of rain.
