Fairy with red poppies

Botanical · Colour · Flash

A winged fairy in a flowing pink dress stands among large red poppies, with seed pods on thin stems curling beneath her. The drawing uses dark brown linework with soft watercolour-style washes in red, coral and pink. The fairy sits centrally with the poppies framing her on the left and lower right, set against a cream, textured background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The poppies had come up through the wheat again, as they did whenever the headland was left unploughed, and by the time Hanna Doyle reached the gate the bottom field looked like a spill of red wine. She stood with her basket on her hip and counted the seed heads, the way her grandmother had, and the way the fairy at the far hedge had always counted them too.

The fairy had never asked for much. Each autumn she walked the rows with a thimble of dew and a bone comb, drawing the ripe pods down until they rattled, and in return the village slept through the hungry months with bread still warm in its dreams. Hanna's mother had said the bargain was older than the church. Hanna had thought it a nursery tale until the spring the harvest failed and her brother came in from the field with his boots full of frost and nothing in his hands.

This year the fairy did not come. Hanna walked the field twice, tapping pods with her knuckle, and found only one green bud trembling on a stalk by the stile. She cupped it in her palm. It was cold, and as she watched it split a crack, and a thread of red light ran out across her wrist like a question.

She did what her grandmother would have done. She carried the pod home, set it on the sill above the hearth, and poured a dish of milk beneath it. That night she sat up with her back to the fire and counted the stars through the thatch until her eyes ached. The milk was gone by morning, and the field came up red again the following summer without anyone having to ask.
