Seated fairy with wings and a flower

Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a winged fairy sitting with one leg extended, long hair falling around her body, and a small flower at the bottom left. The linework is soft and layered, with fine strands in the hair and feathered shading across the wings and body. The design is rendered entirely in black and grey ink on lightly toned skin, and the figure fills the upper right of the frame with a curl of smoke-like swirl above her wings.

Dear Tom,

The pass has been shut since Tuesday and the Crown at Hollin Gate is full of men who cannot agree on anything except the state of the road. I am writing this by the window in the room over the stables, where the glass has frosted at the edges like the lace on Mother's good cloth. Mrs Pryce says the snow has come down so hard the sheep have gone under the wall, and the village children are digging them out one by one.

Yesterday I found a sketchbook under the settle in the snug. Most of it is horses, badly drawn. Near the back there is a woman sitting with one leg stretched out as if she were resting on a bank of moss, her hair falling round her like weed in a stream, and wings thin as a dragonfly's, shaded so softly you could blow the pencil off the page. A single flower lies at her foot. Beside it someone has written, "for when the thaw comes."

Mrs Pryce says the book belonged to a lodger who walked out in the spring and never came back for it. She laughed when I asked whether the woman in the drawing was meant to be a fairy, then told me the cellar stairs had once snagged a grey curl of hair on a nail, and nobody could say whose it was.

I have decided to leave the sketchbook open on the table for whoever comes down next. Perhaps the thaw will bring the lodger back to claim it. Or perhaps it will bring nothing but the coach and the road to Carlisle, and I will keep the drawing, as I suspect I was meant to.

Love, Nell
