The rope had to be laid up again before the tide turned, and Nell Harrow still hadn't found the second end. Her father's walk ran the length of the ditch behind the chandlery, and every October the village ropewalk smelled of tar and wet hemp. She sat on an upturned crate with the hank across her knees and tried to remember which strand her mother had called the sure one.

The letter had come with the last of the summer lines, folded around a pressed sweet pea. Her mother's hand had never been neat. The letters looped and dropped, the way they did on the back of the seed packets, and on the inside of the fold it said only keep it going. Nell had read it twelve times. She had not yet worked out whether it meant the rope, the shop, or herself.

Old Tobias from the lock came by with his pipe unlit and watched her splice. He said nothing about grief. He pulled a length of marline from his coat, made a figure eight with two turns, and pushed it across the crate toward her. 'Never cut it,' he said. 'Put the flower in the middle and go round.'

She did. Each pass of the strands crossed the last and came back to the start, and by dusk there was a loop she could not find the end of. She worked the pressed sweet pea into the crossing, sealed it with tar, and hung the rope on the hook by the door where the light from the lock house could reach it. Nothing in the knot was finished. That was the point.
