Geometric arrow tattoo on the foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small arrow runs diagonally along the side of a bare foot, with a row of stacked open triangles forming the arrowhead and a dark, shaded fletching at the base. The linework is thin and crisp, with some grey shading inside the feathers and a couple of small dots beside the tail. The ink is entirely black and grey against warm skin, and the tattoo sits against a wooden floor in an informal, close-up snapshot.

The stakes went in at dawn, one every hundred yards, each capped with a small open triangle of red rag that Dell had cut from an old work shirt. Harrow said the flags were for the grader drivers. Dell knew better. The flags marked the sightline, the one true line through forty miles of scrub, and the sightline ran where the arrow pointed, a straight thing laid across the cracked plain as if the land had agreed to it.

Three weeks in, the wind came off the dry lake and took four flags in a single night. Harrow wanted to start again from the county benchmark, which meant a fortnight's delay and a bill he would have to explain. Dell took the theodolite out alone instead. She set it on the last surviving stake and sighted along the row of triangles stepping away towards the hills. Each one sat exactly on the line. Whoever had stacked them had not been guessing.
She recorded it in her ledger the way she recorded everything, in pencil, with two small dots for the bench marks she had driven into the rock on either side. Then she walked the line to the hills, counting paces against the flags, and found the road had not moved an inch from where the old maps put it.
The grader came out at noon. Harrow stood beside it with his hat in his hands and said nothing at all.
