Family script inside an infinity symbol on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a thin black script word, family, looped through an infinity symbol on the inner wrist and lower forearm. Small capital letters sit around the loop, and the linework is even and single-weight with no visible shading. The ink is black on pale skin against a blurred grey background, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

The ink had thickened in the cold, and Brother Aldous spent the first hour of Prime warming the horn pot between his palms before he dared touch the quill. Abbot Wulfric wanted one word heading the new almonry ledger, the list of those fed each winter, and he wanted it written without a blot. The scribe had never been asked for a word so small.

Aldous chose to write it as a loop, letting the pen run down from the F, round in a wide curve, and back through the middle so the letters could never be lifted off the page. Brother Cuthbert, who had taught him his letters with a stick in the mud, watched from the bench and said nothing until the curve closed. Then he laughed softly. 'You have made it go on,' he said. 'That is not what a ledger is for.'

Aldous had an answer ready, though he had not known it until the pen stopped. The almonry fed the same faces every year: the widow's boys, the ferryman's daughter, the old men who came back after harvest. A list ends when a man is buried. A loop does not. He set the initials E, A and L about the curve where the rubricator would pick them out in red, then blew gently until the ink was dry enough to keep.

When the abbot came to check the work, he ran his thumb over the looped word and said nothing for so long that the candle guttered. Then he sent for the red ink himself.
