Family script on upper chest
Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a single word, Family, written in black cursive script on the upper chest near the collarbone. The letters have a mix of thin and slightly heavier strokes with a flowing, joined form, and the ink is dark and crisp against the skin. The frame is tightly cropped to the tattoo with a grey top and white bra strap at the edge, and the lighting is soft.

The cook's boy hands you the post on the fourth week out from Tilbury, and there is only one envelope, thin as a tea towel, addressed in your mother's looping hand. You don't open it on deck. You take it below to the bunk you share with a Filipino engineer who snores like a winch, and you sit on the edge of the mattress with your boots still on.

Inside is a single sheet of lined paper with no news and no weather. She has written one word and underlined it twice, the way she used to on birthday cards, the letters joined so the whole thing reads like one long breath. Family. Nothing else. You know what she means: the reeds on the Medway, the kitchen with the broken lamp, your brother sulking on the back step over whatever he'd been denied that week.
Three days later the sea gets up off the Azores and the ship rolls until the mess crockery sings. You are lashing a container on the foredeck when a wave comes green over the rail. You hold the cleat with both hands and think of nothing but that word, the way it kept its shape while everything else slid. When the deck comes level again you go back down to the mess and borrow a pen from the purser.
You write on the back of her envelope: We are all still here. Hold the line. You fold it, post it at the next port, and the word goes ahead of you across the Atlantic, looped and joined, waiting at the other end for someone to read it aloud.
