Red lip kiss tattoo on a thigh
Thigh · Colour · Photo
A close-up photograph of a person lying on a bed, showing a solid red lip print tattoo on the upper thigh, just above a thin black strap. The lip mark is filled with flat red ink and has a soft outline, with no visible shading. The background is a black and white zebra print blanket and a white sheet, and the warm skin tone contrasts with the red ink.

The bridge-keeper at Low Weir had a wife who could not say goodbye in words, so each evening she pressed her mouth to the iron rail where the ferry men tied up, leaving a print of madder red mixed with tallow from the pot she kept in her apron. The river folk said it was a quaint habit and let her be.

Her husband, Tobias Hale, went out into the fog one November and did not come back to the landing. She kept at the rail for three winters. The lock-men scrubbed it with lye and the marks came back by morning, pale at first, then bright as fresh paint, until the whole length of the railing looked like a row of small red moons.
In the third winter a girl from the lamp-works came down the steps just before midnight, a letter folded small in her fist. She asked what the marks meant. The keeper's wife said, 'Each one is a question I never finished asking.' The girl looked at the rail for a long time, then leaned in and pressed her own mouth beside the oldest print. The iron gave a low note, like a bell struck under water, and the fog began to thin across the river.
In the morning the rail was clean except for one mark, and the first ferry came in with its bow lamp still lit. The men aboard swore a figure stood at the stern, lifting one hand, though nobody on the landing could say whether he was coming home or only saying farewell. The red marks are still on the rail in places, and nobody scrubs them now.
