The carter's son would not go over the Vell Pass in winter, so it was Ilse Varga who carried the salt up the switchbacks that November, with two mules and a lantern hung from a pole. Nobody had told her the road looped back on itself nine times before the summit. She counted the loops aloud, the way her grandmother had taught her to count stitches, and by the seventh she had stopped counting and started singing.

At the top stood the old waystation, its door nailed shut and a board above it nearly taken by the snow. Someone had carved a word into the beam long ago, in curling letters that ran past the edge of the wood and turned back on themselves, as if the carver had been too proud to stop. The word was Fearless. Ilse read it twice by lantern light and laughed, because the mules were trembling and she was not, and it seemed a poor joke to leave a word like that for strangers in the snow.

She unloaded the salt, lit the stove, and sat beneath the carving until the wind dropped. In the morning the valley below was full of cloud, and the road ran down through it in the same long loops, each one wider than the last. She went slowly, the mules ahead of her, murmuring the word under her breath the way you would tie a knot to keep it from slipping.

At the bottom the innkeeper asked how the pass had been. Ilse thought of the loops and the beam and the stubborn curl of the letters, and said it had been easy enough, once she had decided it would be.
