Infinity symbol with birds and faith script

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A fine black infinity symbol flies across the skin with three small birds perched along its upper loop, and the word faith is written in cursive script through the lower loop. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is entirely in black ink. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame against a warm, softly lit background, with a patterned fabric edge visible at the bottom.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody on Tessaly Ring had seen the sky in four generations, so when the homing pigeons came back we counted them like coins. Three, always three, the grey one with the torn left wing leading. My grandmother kept the loft on the outer loop, where the rail curves back on itself like a figure eight laid on its side, and she said the birds flew that shape because it was the only route the old engineers had left us that never ended.

The message tubes were the size of my smallest finger. Most weeks they held nothing but ration tallies from the Hollow Quarter, or a child's sketch of a dog nobody had ever met. The month the Lowe brothers went out to fix the pressure seam, the tube on the grey bird held a single word in careful capitals: HOLD. Grandmother read it, folded it into her sleeve, and went back to feeding the birds as if she had read the price of bread.

I asked her how she knew they would return. She tapped the loop of the rail on the wall map, then ran her finger across the point where the two arcs met. 'You don't trust the ending,' she said. 'You trust the crossing. Everything that leaves comes back through the middle, because the middle is the only place that is always the same distance from home.'

The Lowe brothers came through the seam on the ninth morning, cold and unshaven, carrying the grey bird in a cupped glove. It had kept its course. I wrote the word on the loft door in my own hand, faith, then the small curl of the rail beneath it, and I left the door open for whoever came next.
