Black script tattoo reading fearless in a thin cursive hand on the inside of a wrist, with the fingers curled up above it.

Fearless script on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photo of a forearm and hand, with the fingers curled upward against a pale wall. The word fearless is written in black, fine cursive script across the inner wrist. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the image is warm toned with soft lighting.

Dear Nell,

I found the lighthouse keeper's ledger in the back of the chandlery, the one Mr Abbott swore had been lost in the 1911 flood. It was wedged behind a crate of rusted hinges, and when I pried the cover open, a pressed fern dropped out onto my boots. You always said I'd never finish a sentence without a bit of drama, so here is the drama: the last entry is dated the night before the Mary Ellen went down off Scarrow Point, and it says only, in very neat copperplate, that the keeper would stay lit whatever the sea did.

I have walked the harbour wall three nights running now with the ledger under my coat. The lamp still turns on the hour, though nobody has paid for its oil since the council sold the tower. Last night the wind came round from the north and the gulls went quiet all at once, and I stood there with the page in my hand thinking how strange it is that a person can write a single word in a book and have it outlast the weather, the men, the boat.

So I've decided. Tomorrow I am going to ask Mrs Pell at the cafe if she will let me borrow her good pen, and I am going to copy that line into the front of the ledger in my own hand, so that whoever finds it next knows the keeper was not afraid. Come up on Saturday if you can. Bring the tea, and not the cheap stuff this time.

Yours, from the cold end of the quay, Jo
