Thin black script reading fearless across the upper back, just below the neck, in a fine line lettering style.

Fearless script on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The image shows the upper back of a person with wavy blonde hair falling over the shoulder, with the back of the neck visible. A single word, fearless, is written in a delicate, continuous script in thin black linework. The soft, neutral background and light skin tone keep the focus on the lettering, which sits slightly off centre to the right.

The lamp on Carrack Skerry failed in the November gale, and by the time Mara Dunning reached the lamp room the glass was black with salt and the oil can was empty. Below her, over the water, she could hear the boatman's wife calling her son's name. Her father had kept this light for thirty years and never once let it go dark. He had told her that a wick only burns while someone is willing to climb the stair in the dark.

She had no oil, so she went down to the store where the old tallow was kept, cut it into strips with the bread knife, and wound them round the burner with twine. It smoked and spat. She sat with her back against the cold iron pedestal and sang the song her mother used to sing about herring girls, because her hands kept shaking and the tune kept them still. Halfway through the second verse the flame steadied and took.

The boat came in on the beam at first light, three men and a boy in a dinghy half full of seawater, rowing as though the rock itself were chasing them. The boy was the one who had been calling for his mother. He climbed onto the landing and stood looking up at the lamp room without a word, and Mara only pointed at the whitewashed wall of the keeper's cottage, where her father had once chalked a single word for the men who came after him.

That morning she took the pot of tar and a stick and wrote beneath it in her own careful hand, with one unbroken line so the tar would not drip and break, the word her father had meant all along: fearless. Then she went up to trim the wick for the next night.
