Dear Nell, the runner beans have finally gone mad on the fence, and I have been picking them every morning since you left, so you can stop fretting that I'm starving myself on toast. The robin is back on the spade handle. I've decided he is the same one from last spring, because he has the same cheeky tilt to his head, and I've been leaving him worms from the compost bin like a proper pensioner. The sweet peas you planted in the corner have come up crooked, but I left them be. Some things need a bit of stubbornness to get going, and you were always the stubbornest seed in the packet.

I went through the box of your father's seed catalogues on Tuesday and found the old notebook with his handwriting on the back page, the one that just says, Plant it anyway, you daft beggar. I laughed until I had to sit down on the step. I have pinned it to the potting bench where the light catches it in the afternoons.

Mind the hose, love. Ring me Sunday. Your loving Gran.
