Your father's gloves are already tied to the back bumper of the hire car when you come down the chapel steps, and you pretend not to see them. They are green, cracked at the laces, and someone has threaded a strip of green satin through the cuffs, the same shade as the ribbon your sister wore pinned to her coat at the funeral. Nobody in the family has mentioned it. Your cousin Dev did the knot, badly, and it is already working loose.
