Love Never Fails script and star on shoulder

Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A black script phrase reading Love Never Fails runs diagonally across the skin towards a symmetrical star-like motif formed from looping heart shapes. The linework is bold and smooth, with solid black ink and no shading or colour. The image is a close, warm-toned photograph focused on the shoulder and upper back, with the lettering and motif framed at the right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had shut the Cragg road for three days when Mr Ellery brought his mother's sewing tin down to the kitchen and asked me to read the card inside it aloud. I was nineteen and had been scrubbing pans at the Fellhead Inn since October, which made me the only person in the house with time to spare and the only one who could make out his mother's copperplate.

The card was yellowed at the corners. On one side someone had pricked a small star into the paper, five hearts looped into one another so that each point tied the next, and beneath it, in careful ink, ran the words Love never fails. Ellery turned it over and over as if the star might rearrange itself. His mother had been a seamstress in the valley, and he said she had never once explained the pattern to him, only that it was for the people who wrote to each other.

Mrs Haworth, who had kept the inn longer than the snow had kept the road, came in stamping her boots and said there was a second card under the lining of the tin. It was the same star, drawn in a different hand, dated 1911, with a name scratched out so hard the paper had torn. Five hearts, five correspondents, I thought, though I did not say it, because Ellery was already laughing at himself and wiping his eyes with a tea towel.

We hung the first card above the bar before supper, pinned beside the brass clock. By morning the thaw had not come, but the window had frosted in a pattern that was nearly the same knot, and I counted its loops with my thumbnail while the kettle sang.
