Infinity symbol with family script and birds
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows an infinity symbol with the word family written in cursive script across its centre, with small bird silhouettes perched and flying along the loops. The linework is bold and solid, and the ink is uniformly black with no shading or colour. It is photographed close up on the lower back, with the subject's skin and a patterned fabric waistband filling the frame.

The snow had buried the lane to the top of the gate by the time Nell gave up on the bell. Her brothers were somewhere beyond Bleak Fell with the carrier's mule, and the inn at Cold Harbour had one lamp lit in the back kitchen and a pot of barley going soft on the hob.

She counted the hooks behind the bar instead. Four for mugs, six for the lanterns, and one long brass hook her father had used for the dinner bell before the tin one replaced it. Above the door a row of starlings had roosted in the eaves since October, shuffling their feathers against the cold, and every time the wind shifted they lifted in a dark loop over the yard and settled again, as if they were arguing about where to land.
Her father used to say the birds knew the road better than any carrier. He had chalked them on the slate by the stairs once, a sideways eight for the endless way round, with small birds strung along its loops and the word FAMILY running through the middle in his careful hand. Nell had rubbed it out with her sleeve the spring he died, and wished now she had left it alone.
At midnight the bell finally rang, not from the gate but from the lane, one harsh peal. She ran out with the lantern. Two shapes came through the drift, bent double under sacks, and behind them a third, small enough to be carried on a back. She held the light high so they could find the door. Above her the starlings rose and wheeled in the dark, once round the yard, then came down together on the roof.
