Feather and arrow with script on the back
Lettering · Back · Mixed · Photo
A feather with teal and purple shading sits at the left end of a thin black arrow shaft, and the arrowhead points right. The words Follow your arrow are written in black cursive script across the shaft, with the feather in colour and the lettering in solid black. The tattoo is centred on a close crop of pale skin, with a soft blurred background.

Dear Nell,

The jay feathers came in on Tuesday, a whole sack of them off the keeper at Hallam Wood, and I've spent two evenings sorting them by shade. You'd have laughed at me. Most are plain brown, but the ones from the wing edge flash teal when the lamp catches them, and the odd one has a purple bloom like a bruise going off. I kept those back for you. You said you'd not be fletching anything once the train pulled out for Leeds, but you'll want something to hold on the platform.
Your mother thinks I'm soft on you for going, and maybe I am. Forty years I've cut shafts for the archers on the green and never once asked where an arrow wanted to go. It goes where it's sent, that's the trade. But you were never a girl who waited to be sent.
Enclosed is the one I made. Ash shaft, nock bound in red thread, three feathers glued and whipped, the feather on the left and the point on the right, the way my father taught me. Mind the bend when you pack it. Lay it in the lining of your case where the porters can't crush it.
Write when you're settled and tell me which way you've gone. Follow your arrow, love. It's the only instruction a fletcher ever gives.
