The dragonfly came back to the water tank this morning, the blue one with the grey wings you used to call a helicopter when you were four. It sat on the end of the tap rail for an hour, perfectly still, as if someone had sent it to keep an eye on the road. Nobody else was up. The bread wasn't in and the road trains were still a hundred miles off, so I sat on the step with my tea and watched it.
I haven't told you how bad the water got in March. The bore pump gave out twice, and Ray from the station came down with two jerry cans and wouldn't take the money. I kept the café open anyway. Some mornings there were only three customers, and one of them was a surveyor who drew the same dry creek over and over on the backs of the napkins.
Your father's old hat is still on the hook by the door. I'm not posting it on to you, because you'd only say I'm being sentimental, and you'd be right. I just wanted you to know the road hasn't taken everything. The dragonfly stayed until the heat came up off the bitumen, then it lifted off the rail and went straight east, towards the coast, which is where I'd guess you are.
