Infinity symbol with script quote on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A healed or settled black tattoo of an infinity symbol sits across the forearm, with the script words "you'll be with me wherever I go" written along its upper curve. The linework is thin and even, with solid black lettering and no shading. The skin is light and the background is a soft, out-of-focus blue-grey fabric.

The generator coughs twice before it catches, and you tie the last guy rope to the van hitch while Dessa shouts over the hum that the big wheel has a loose bolt again. You have heard that complaint every August since you were nine, and every August the bolt holds long enough for the season to pay out.

Your brother Ivo rides the Wall of Death on Thursdays, a drum of pine planks where the motorbike climbs the curve until gravity seems to forget its job. Before each ride he lays a loop of red cotton on the bench and knots it three times, one knot for each town they have left behind since spring. He says the cotton is a cord that runs from the drum to whoever is waiting at the gate, and in eleven seasons it has never once snapped.
On the last night in Clayford, Ivo draws a figure of eight in the dust with the toe of his boot and asks you to write what your mother used to say when the lorries pulled out. You write it small in the margin of the ledger, the letters leaning the way hers did. He reads it, folds the page into his jacket pocket, and laughs because your handwriting is worse than his.
Three seasons on, you take the bike up the Wall alone, the red cotton knotted at your wrist. At the top of the curve the planks hum like a wire under the tyres. You don't look down. You just follow the loop round and round, the way he showed you, and the crowd below starts counting the laps out loud.
