Feather and rose with infinity loop

Realism · Black and grey · Photo

A feather and a black rose are linked by a thin infinity-symbol stem that runs diagonally across the skin. The feather is rendered with soft grey shading and fine vane detail, while the rose has deep black petals with light grey highlights. The design sits against a plain, warm-toned background with even lighting.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow has sealed the lane since Tuesday, so the coachman who was meant to fetch you will not come, and the landlady of the Crowhurst Inn gives you the room over the stables because it is the only one with a working hearth. You unpack a writing case you never meant to open. Beneath a black rose pressed flat as a pressed flower, its petals gone the colour of old ink, lies a letter in your own hand, addressed to a name you have spent eleven years not saying.

A grey feather lies beside it, its vane split where a nib once caught it. Downstairs a fiddle is tuning and the taproom smells of wet wool and onions. You sit on the bed and read the letter as if a stranger wrote it, someone who loved too quickly and reasoned slowly. It says the road out of the valley bends back on itself. Every journey ends at the same stile below the church, and the only way to be free of a place is to walk it backwards until you forget which way you came.

By midnight the fiddle has stopped and the snow has thinned to a fine grit against the shutters. You try to write a reply, but the nib keeps drifting toward the margin, looping the same figure again and again until the page is full of it, a sideways eight that never closes.

At first light the sky is clean and the lane shows as a pale ribbon curving back toward the village. You leave the rose on the windowsill for the landlady's daughter, who has been watching you from the yard all morning, and take the feather. It weighs almost nothing, which is how you know you can carry it.
