Leafy branch on the collarbone

Botanical · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A small branch with six leaves extends diagonally across the upper chest, just below the collarbone. Each leaf is outlined in black with fine parallel hatching for the veins, and the stem tapers to a point on the left. The ink is solid black on warm skin, and a grey top strap sits at the right edge of the frame.

Dear Ma, the wind has finally dropped enough for me to write this sitting on the hatch cover, so forgive the blots. We came in off the Dogger on Tuesday with the holds full of cod and not much else, and Skipper Pyle swore at the ice machine for an hour because it had frozen solid again. I've enclosed the leaf you asked for. It's from the sycamore behind the chapel wall in Eyemouth, where I stopped on the way down to the quay, because nothing grows worth pressing on this side of the harbour.

The branch was a bit crushed when I got it out of my oilskin, so I've tried to keep the leaves in order. There are six on the one stem, gone brown at the edges, but the veins still show like someone drew them with a very fine pen. Danny Coe in the next bunk says that's how you can tell a leaf was living, because the veins outlast the green. I told him that was rubbish, and then I caught myself checking them every night before lights out.

The owners want us out again on Sunday, and I've said yes, because the money will pay for the new range. Tell Ellen I've not forgotten her birthday. Her card is in the envelope with the leaf, and the stamp is the lighthouse one, which she'll like more than the sycamore.

Keep the branch flat inside the Bible so it doesn't curl. I'll be home before the leaves go properly.

Your loving son, Tom
