The chart had been drawn the way my grandfather drew everything, with a ruler and no apology. Eleven petals, he wrote in the margin of the second page, but I count nine and a half, so the sheet is either wrong or the flower is. We were four weeks out from Port Stanley on the Kestrel Rose, and the cook had begun to ration the tinned peaches, so there was little else to do but argue with a dead man's arithmetic.

He had sketched the thing in a lodging house in Liverpool, before he ever saw the water it was meant to grow in. A lotus, he said, opens by overlapping its petals so that none of them stands alone, and a ship works the same way if the watches keep their lines. I thought it a sentimental notion until the Bosun showed me the rope plan, where every halyard ran under the next and every turn was taken twice. Nothing on that vessel was free to stand by itself.

On the last night of the passage I traced the outline onto the back of the chart with a pencil stub, petal over petal, until the paper was grey with my overlaps. When I held it to the lamp the shapes fanned from one base point exactly as his had, and I saw that he had not drawn nine petals or eleven, but the one I had nearly missed, a leaf turned back on itself at the top, drawn in the faintest line of all. I folded the chart into my oilskin and went up to take the wheel.
