Feather tattoo behind the ear

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small feather is drawn in black ink on the skin behind the ear, angled diagonally with its tip pointing down. The feather is rendered in fine, delicate linework with soft shading along the vane, and the photograph is black and white. The composition is a close side view of the ear and neck, with the hair pulled back at the edge of the frame.

The kettle has boiled twice since I started this, so forgive the blots. Your boat came in on the morning tide, Tom, and Mrs Pardoe says you looked like a drowned crow on the quay, which I told her was no way to talk about my brother.

I found a feather on the slipway yesterday, caught in the tar where the lobster pots are stacked. Grey at the root and dark towards the tip, fine as a hair when I held it up to the window. I thought of the gull that must have dropped it, and then of you out past the Shingle Bank in that squall, with the ledger buttoned inside your coat and no clear sense of which way was up.

Father always said a feather on the slipway means weather coming behind it. He said it the winter the Mary Ellen went down, and I never believed him, but I kept the feather anyway, in the biscuit tin with Mother's buttons. I have sorted that tin twice this week looking for it. It is not in there. I think I left it on the wall by the harbour master's steps, where I stopped to watch the lifeboat come back in.

Come home on the eleven o'clock bus and bring the ledger. If the wind turns round to the west, the feather goes back on the slipway and we will see which of us was right. Your sister, Ada.
