Feather tattoo on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet rest on sand, with the right foot showing a solid black feather tattoo that runs from the ankle onto the instep. The feather has a dark central shaft, fine barbs and a fluffy plume at the top, shaded in black and grey. The left foot wears a silver chain anklet, and the warm, slightly blurred background keeps attention on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marisol Penhallow had been stringing beads at the back of the Porthcurno stall since March, and by August the wire had worn grooves into her thumbs. The gulls had learned the rattle of her tin cash box. She kept one pattern for herself and sold it to almost no one: a fine chain with a single jet bead and a crow's flight feather knotted at its end, the barbs still glossy when the light caught them.

The man who asked for it wore his wedding ring on the wrong hand and talked as though the sea owed him money. His sister was marrying at the cove on Saturday, he said, and she would dance on the sand until her shoes were lost, so she needed something that would stay put. Marisol measured the chain against the span of her own palm, because people never knew their own measurements, and she tied the knot three times, the way her mother had taught her, so it would hold through a reel.

On Saturday the guests left their shoes in a heap beside the rocks and a small white dog ran off with a napkin. Marisol stayed behind the stall counting coins. On Monday the man came back alone, sand still in the creases of his trousers, and set a folded note on the counter. It said: She danced until the tide came in and lost one shoe and nothing else. Could you make me one exactly the same.

Marisol made two. For the second she tied the feather on a double loop, the kind that slides free with one pull, so that whoever wore it would be the one to decide when it came off.
