Feather tattoo on an ankle
Blackwork · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot shows a black feather tattoo on the ankle, hanging from a thin cord with a small bead above it. The feather has a solid, fluffy black plume, a central quill and dark shaded barbs. The image is black and grey, with a second foot wearing beaded anklets and a purple skirt blurred behind it on sandy ground.

Dear Ada,

The whistle went at half five this morning and I was already up, sat on the step with the kettle warming, because Davy Brannigan came round the back at four with his cap in his hands and a jam jar on a string. Inside the jar was a jackdaw's wing feather, black as the coal face, tied with waxed cord and a blue glass bead from the Co-op tin. He'd found it on the wind road under the old fan house, where nothing lives but dust and the rats that come up from the drift. He said it was for the girl who sold the ribbons, and then went red and said it was for anyone who needed a bit of sky.
I didn't know what to say to that, so I told him to take it to Mrs Pringle before his shift, since she lost her boy in the roof fall and has been sat by the window ever since. He went off with the jar swinging against his leg, looking back twice.
Mrs Pringle wouldn't take it. She said feathers were for birds and bad luck for anyone who carried them underground. But Davy left it on her sill anyway, and this afternoon she had it pinned to her hat, and she walked past the colliery gates without once looking at the headframe.
Write soon. Tell Father the chapel roof is mended, and that I am not walking to the pit head alone after dark, whatever he says.
Your loving sister, Nell
